There’s one reason to buy new stuff, that being you don’t have that stuff. When I bought my house, I moved in with like two folding chairs and a card table. I eventually bought stuff, and that stuff is all 10-12 years old now. Unfortunately, my kids have murdered my poor Interior Define couch (that I bought before they existed), and so a new couch will come eventually.
Not having furniture is a reason to buy used/vintage/antique stuff, not new. New furniture is almost always either inferior quality or exorbitantly expensive. (Some things from IKEA, such as the Poäng chair, are exceptions, but not many.)
I agree for some furniture, but I’m not buying used couches. I see couches roadside with a “free” sign from time to time, and I just shudder thinking about what’s happened on that couch.
That, I agree with! Also, upholstered stuff in general can be risky because of bedbugs.
Still, used upholstered furniture from an actual store (or gifted from someone you actually know) is probably safer than curb stuff. I would only take hard-surface furniture from the curb.

Particularly the furniture. New furniture is a waste. Aside from like, mattresses. Zero reason to buy new frames, tables, etc. None.
