  • My advice is the same, but my timeline very different. The hardest moment was a couple of days in. I didn’t have friends or hobbies or knowledge of the place yet, a lot of time on my hands and I was staring down being away from home “for ever”. Then the ball got rolling on my social life and I found my tempo.

Other advice: make learning the local language an absolute priority if you don’t know it yet. Also because language courses are a great place to meet your first local friends.

  • The metaphor of the open seminar is misleading. In an open seminar, the presenter stake a claim to the work, even if incomplete. In this case, the work was in private repositories. A more precise methodology would be the AI overhearing the authors discussing in their office and using that as base for a proof. This is even sneakier because there has been no public claim of the method or results by the authors.

  • The more I sit on it, the more enraged I am about the news.

They most likely stole the result. They dropped a massive proof with no human understanding it (come on, how many can understand math at that level? 5 world wide? And definitely none at OpenAI), they dropped hundreds of thousands of line of validation (see above), burned a significant fraction of the metaphorical Amazon in the process, dumped more money than most math departments yearly budgets, and claimed victory.
