Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is your weirdest self-hosting problem you've had to solve? For me: Mouse inside the server.English
0·30 days agoOn one computer I had a recessed reset button, so I used that as power.
Another computer I added a wire to an external button double stick taped to the back of the monitor so I can turn on both at the same time.

9·3 months agoIt really upsets me that block web browser apps… WTF.
So now we have to get apps that get all types of information from the device instead. Huge NO for me.

I use this product on all the windows in the summer and winter. It insulates a bit and also reflects back.
The one thing better than inside is to have something on the outside, but that’s not possible for me, because it gets really windy here.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Why bother with jellyfin, arr stack and everything else if free streaming services exist?English
6·3 months agoHere is a few off the top of my mind:
Streaming services take away content all the time, license expired and goes to another service.
Streaming services do not have everything, they are actually quite limited on content.
Streaming services often remove episodes from seasons, so you don’t even get all the episodes.
Pirate streaming sites go down all the time as governments crack down.
Streaming services cost more and more and more, with less and less content.
Some media is only available on older mediums such as VHS (and never came out on dvd, streaming, etc) but pirates have archived these rare movies.
You might feel like the world is available to you online, but I have been around since the start of the internet and have seen many, many things go the way of the dodo 🦤. Things go away. Websites gone, files gone, laws change, etc. if you’re not archiving it, you may never see it again.

5·4 months agoI think some are called “maker space” and I think it’s like a membership you pay and you gain access to a full shop of tools.
Maybe consider living in a vehicle.
When I had to move out due to abusive family, I lived in my car for several months traveling and looking for my future home.
I had time to setup the car like a mini camper. Had everything I needed. Twin bed, fridge, solar power, etc. I recommend watching the YouTube “cheap rv living” and other channels about car camping. It’s quite affordable to live in a vehicle and not pay rent, utilities, etc.
As others said the gym is a great place for showers.

My sales had a significant drop the past several months, it’s now just barely over my bills. And my bills are really small compared to most.
Quite freaked out about it. Keep thinking sales are coming… Xmas is soon… Where are the sales?
I setup rain water catchment and solar power, so at least I have free water and power.
Counted my stash of canned foods yesterday and checked all the experation dates.
Just making sure I have: food, water, shelter. No matter what happens, hopefully I can ride it out here.
