That’s a ridiculous statement. I make royalties from sales of an audio sample library I once worked on. If people just pirated that sample library and got it for free and didn’t buy it, I wouldn’t receive any royalties.

None of these anti-copyright arguments hold any water for me. Copyright protects everyone, regardless of if they’re tiny or huge. If you believe that isn’t true because of the legal system favoring those with big pockets, that’s the problem, not the concept of copyright per se.

When you intentionally program a system to run in a loop autonomously without humans verifying every action taken, guess what? Shit happens. This was entirely predictable.

Have you seen the booking.com ads? They’re literally about people in crappy desk jobs dreaming about going to some beautiful paradise location, and the location is AI generated. Think about it. People are dreaming about going to a fake place in the ad because the actual earth isn’t exciting enough? WTF 😵‍💫

If someone is angrily tweeting (on their latest smartphone) about how an artist using Midjourney is destroying the planet, I have to ask — did you consider the water and carbon behind the burger you had for lunch, the fast-fashion shirt you’re wearing, or that round-trip flight you took last month?

…yep, this is what artists do. They have an idea, they visualize it in detail with their minds, and then they use their skills to produce a stylized version of that in some real-world fashion.

It’s awesome you’re developing visualization skills! I know there are some people seem to lack that ability altogether (aphantasia), but it’s something I’ve been able to do well since a very young age. While I am not an illustrator, I’m a graphics designer & photographer, and I’m not sure I could do either well without that ability.

No, you’re wrong. And judging from all the comments you’ve been making in reply to people explaining to you why you’re wrong, I’m wondering why you’re here seemingly to pick fights instead of actually learn, which is what you had intimated in your original post.

Some technologies are uniquely suited to be harmful, easily exploited by the greedy and extremely difficult to be made safe. Generative AI is one such technology. We are certainly happy to critique the systems and the people behind this agenda. We will also critique the technology itself.

Why are you asking here? There are like a million YouTube videos and blog posts about it already, or you can go find a young person in your life and ask them why “Generative AI” is terrible and they’ll be glad to tell you. (e.g. Kane Parsons!)

If you’re asking for expert research into the topic, some names come to mind: Timnit Gebru, Alex Hanna, Emily M. Bender, Karen Hao, Adam Conover, Ed Zitron, Paris Marx, Mo Bitar. I also report regularly on this topic via the Vibe Coded podcast and Cycles Hyped No More newsletter.

The hate has become vocal and common because it’s a fascist technology bankrolled by oligarchs which will cook a planet already on the brink of extreme climate change, bring the open web to its knees, and lead weaker minds into psychosis. But other than that, it’s totally great! 😆

I don’t agree summarization is an OK use case as a product. Maybe as a one off thing that a user explicitly requests of their own data within an office suite or whatever.

Meanwhile, I’ve been looking at the mincemeat “Google AI mode” makes of my essays, completely changing the meaning and giving people false conclusions which misrepresent my position. It’s shockingly awful.

As I’ve posted elsewhere on teh socials, I think being critical of AI/LLM tooling as well as projects which use them is perfectly acceptable. But if it crosses the line into harassment of individual maintainers, I don’t think that’s cool.

It’s a fine line to be sure, but if we go way over the top in our battles against slop, it can end up being counterproductive.

Ah I see. Well it’s true that there’s some concern about how the compatibility story could work from M3 onward, but as I said, M1/M2 generation is pretty solid and you can get a great deal from the used market. I don’t know who was telling you it sucked. 😅

A used Apple M2 desktop or laptop is probably the best deal in the biz right now. I’m rocking Asahi GNOME on an old Mac mini M1 right now, works great. Why worry about ditching Asahi? Are you having any problems with it?

I take exception to the claim that AI-generated music is popular. I guarantee you those stats are misleading. Just like if you believe that all of the “views” on X are real, well, I have a bridge in Manhattan to sell you.
