Survivorship bias is a logical error that happens when you focus only on the winners or survivors of a process while completely ignoring the ones that failed.
This mistake creates a distorted view of reality because the missing data from the failures is invisible. It is a common type of selection bias.
Famous Example: World War II PlanesDuring World War II, the military studied returning airplanes to see where they needed extra armor.The returning planes had bullet holes mostly on the wings and tail, but very few on the engines.
Officers wanted to armor the parts with the most holes.
Statistician Abraham Wald realized this was survivorship bias.
The planes shot in the engine did not survive to come back.He advised them to armor the engines, because the planes hit there were the ones that crashed.
I think OP is a mixture of survivorship bias and confirmation bias. OP believes they are actually stuck in a shitty job despite the fact that they aren’t and any information they get they use to confirm their belief. Sorry for not elaborating, I know what survivorship bias is. I wanted to hear why you think it is survivorship bias because I agree.
For some. Othes end up working shitty jobs their entire lives.
I was a deckhand on a tug boat for 1 year when I was 18.
Among my coworkers I had the most teeth, the least number of arrests, the least number of ex wives, and the least number of tattoos. I also was involuntarily involved in a felony that ended with one of my coworkers attempting to rape me. Also, working on the river during winter really sucked. Oh, and part of the job involved cleaning fertilizer out of empty barges, so now I have periodic chest scans to look for cancer. One of my other coworkers also tried to light a cigarette whole we were sweeping up the fertilizer dust.
I understood the value of a college education after that year.
That’s the point.
