In the fediverse since 2017. I mostly talk sports. If something on the internet doesn’t spark joy, mute it.

Do not yell at me simply because I am in front of you and the people responsible for the problems are not. It is extremely unpleasant.

  • I love a soccer sticker. I see a GKS Katowice sticker from Poland, a Farencvaros sticker from Hungary, and I’m guessing given the FC Porto sticker, the Porto Casuals are an SG, which is hilarious. I can’t quite id the one directly under the Porto sticker – it looks like it says Futebol Clube de Celtic, but that’s definitely the wrong crest and the wrong language, so maybe some Brazilian club I don’t recognize? There’s also a half sticker with a soccer ball visible that I can’t make heads or tails of but I bet was cool when it was whole.

  • This is the same argument as why you shouldn’t use an LLM to do your homework. The goal of doing the problems isn’t to solve the problems (we can see they are already solved, the universe exists and calculates all kinds of exotic math all the time), it is for humans to understand the math

In recent months, the success of AI in solving major mathematical problems has made headlines even outside mathematical circles. But solving problems is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight. Forgetting this in the world of AI may turn the tool against the primary goal. Indeed, the mass production at faster and faster pace of “true/false” statements could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas.

  • Russian is more productive than English, so there’s a bunch of “we just smushed a bunch of prefixes and suffixes on it” words that don’t have a great English equivalent, like недоперепить – to drink quite a lot but not succeed at drinking too much. I don’t think we properly have листопад which is the equivalent of “snowfall” but for autumn leaves. I really miss успевать – to successfully have enough time to do something. There’s also кипяток – water that has been boiled but then slightly cooled, like 200-205 degrees F. The canonical examples are тоска , which is a kind of melancholy longing, and авось which expresses optimism but I basically never heard anyone actually say.
