I don’t think it is ‘despite’ I think it is because of.
The ruling class wants us just alive enough to be productive, and, failing that, they want us dead.
It could not be more clear. And it could not be more clear where the political establishment sides.
Wal-Mart, for one, has also done this for years.
It’s laughable that socialism is still a bad word in the US, while the largest corporations basically rely on it. Not only do they get handouts directly from the federal government, but they pay less than poverty wages with the explicit model that their workers will supplement their incomes with government assistance.
But profits remain privatized.
Of course, because none of those billions are going anywhere within sight range of their warehouse and distribution workers. What kind of imbecile thinks that investing money into a company will lead to worker wage growth?
“Despite”?
The underlying purpose of AI is to allow “Wealth” to access “Skill” while also removing from the skilled people any ability to access wealth.
This is by design ffs
They’re advertising on the radio where I am about giving training in “coding” and “robotics” for their warehouse staff.
Don’t people realise those are the jobs they’re farming out to AI?
In my opinion, this short sighted grift will fail because there’s not enough people to be able to repair these machines. Component and part shortages are being glossed all over. And then you have people like me, that decided that after over a decade of repairing stuff that maybe I just want to work at the pet store walking distance from my house. I know I’m a drop in the bucket but also the last five people I was to train, to replace me likely, have dropped out in a day to days. AI isn’t going to take my job when seasoned phone techs can’t even solve the problem. I mean really I call them to have a support animal, snide joke, to shoot the shit and bounce ideas.
They are using AI for software / AWS.
They are using wage slaves for warehouse picking and last mile delivery.
Two different things
So?
Same company
The headline reads like they are trying to trying to save money with AI so they can pay they workers. I’m just making it clear they aren’t. They are trying to pay the software devs less.
If you want to read it the way you are implying it should be read they should remove the word despite.
Should probably be “while spending billions on AI Amazon workers still on food stamps”
Yeah that would have been a much better headline
